On the beaches of Senegal, I have long done something I often do at home as well: long, beautiful walks.
But it is different here, because you can
- cross cows
- Find carcasses of sheep, or other animals
- Understand that you are unwelcome to a pack of stray dogs intent on eating a sheep carcass
- A group of children pulling a colorful dugout (featured photo)
The sea is often used as a dumping ground. But especially around Saly there are also resorts and luxurious villas on the shoreline.
Videos from the beaches of Senegal
The first video is from Saint Luis, near the fish market, where activity is hectic. You can see children playing, fishermen working, and also many animals often roaming free.
The second video is also from Saint Luis. Continuing from the fishing district, to the north is very close Mauritania, to the south the Langue de barbarie, becomes a desolate beach. It is a narrow peninsula, 300 meters wide. For a couple of hours I was completely alone.
Animals on the beaches of Senegal
I will spare you the documentation of dead animals, so many of them. This one happens to be seen even on the street. Speaking of beaches, there are no seagulls in Senegal! But among the various birds, there are the beautiful sea eagles. Here I was in Saly, but I saw some in the other places I visited as well.
Finally, the funniest in my opinion are the crabs, here in the hundreds, that run away when I get close. I was near Joal Fadiouth, the island made of shells.
