Here I am live from Dakar, the chaotic capital of Senegal. This is the second article in the series of live from Senegal. I will witness my adventure by making short videos and reporting updates. I am traveling solo and totally autonomously, and I will travel by public transportation.
Live video from Dakar
Highlighted is a glimpse of a beach, one of the best equipped by the way. With understatement one can say that they have ample room for improvement. The second video from my you tube channel is an overview of one of the bus stations; it pretty much gives the idea. At another, more central one with nicer buses that I could not catch, the forecourt was sand.
Where is Dakar ?
Dakar is on a peninsula, with a natural harbor, inhabited since time immemorial, since Paleolithic times. It does not have much to offer, but it is certainly interesting and one of the easiest places to somehow experience a world so far away from our own.
To be precise, I am not really posting live from Dakar, because I just arrived in Saint Luis. Now I’m going to go and find out.
Still me and the cabs of Dakar
I had some difficulties with transportation although not as much as in my incredible arrival which I tell about in the first article: Arrival in Senegal, 01-01-26
I won’t tell you about the driving style, but also (real) drivers who tell me they responded to my app (it took me a little bit to figure it out), and they didn’t. One who in 2026 still doesn’t have internet in his phone and didn’t know where to take me. As many as 3 were coming to me, I could see them with the app, and after 10 minutes of travel, they canceled the reservation.
The app if it worked, it would be great, also because no one speaks English, some not even French and it is not easy to understand each other; one would have to bargain as well, and I, who am not capable, spent much more than necessary with my travels.
While waiting between cabs, I was able to observe a few tidbits. For example, the policeman who stopped a motorcyclist to tell him to charge a military man, obviously without a helmet.
Walking instead, no less than twice, heavily armed soldiers with covered faces prevented me from passing certain political buildings. I guess it must be because of my threatening look.
