Of all the animals in Malaysia, the proboscis monkey is the one I liked the most.

I also saw other monkeys and bearded pigs, but I saw practically all of them in half an hour within a few meters of the visitor center at Baku National Park in Borneo, on a day trip from Kuching.

Animals in Malaysia, on Borneo

On the last day of my 16-day trip, I saw more animals in Malaysia, including some on the peninsula—specifically, the monkeys that swarm the Batu Caves temple near Kuala Lumpur.

But the vast majority of my animal sightings in Malaysia were in Borneo.

A bearded wild boar roaming freely in Baku National Park in Malaysian Borneo. The video was filmed from a boardwalk that crosses Baku National Park, but these wild boars can also be spotted near the visitor center.

This is the beach I came to after my jungle hike; there might be crocodiles here. To me, it looked more like a pirate hideout.

Here are two videos of the same monkey (also featured) near the visitor center at Bako National Park in Malaysian Borneo.

It’s always her! At one point, she stops eating because she sees a bearded wild boar approaching. There’s no love lost between them.

I took this photo in Malacca, though—I was downtown, on the phone. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw it swimming in the river: was it a crocodile or a monitor lizard?
