When I was young, I was skeptical of modern cities; they seemed cold and all the same to me. Over time, I’ve learned that this isn’t necessarily the case. Singapore is perhaps the prime example of a modern, diverse, and decidedly green city. At the same time, it’s extremely livable, orderly, and safe.

For centuries, the city has been a major port, so there was no shortage of wealth. With the independence it gained after the war, that wealth has obviously increased considerably. As in many similar places, alongside so much wealth—perhaps even among the citizens themselves—I imagine there is also a great deal of exploitation of those who perform the simplest tasks and of immigrant workers.

In the foreground is Marina Bay Sands, Singapore’s iconic building. In the background, you can see Singapore’s former symbol, the fountain that is half lion and half mermaid.

Below is a corner of the vast orchid garden in Singapore, located within the botanical garden. This part of the visit was my favorite.

The latest video was filmed from the roof of a Buddhist temple, and you can also see the skyscrapers.

There are many places of worship—both Buddhist and Hindu—as well as mosques and churches.
