Here I am live from Berlin, where I came to celebrate my birthday with a quick, solo tour of two cities (the other being Dresden) that I had seen before.
I had seen Berlin in 2002 on a two-week itinerant trip, again solo, but under very different conditions than today. The trip was good, but I enjoyed it little because I was a bit too sentimentally crumpled at the time. I was curious to see her again after so many years.
From Dresden, on the other hand, I had passed there on a daring road trip with my brother in 2014. We passed by the magically snow-covered Neuschwanstein Castle and went mostly to Prague. We had a series of car problems, though, which led us to see Dresden very hastily. But enough to realize that I would have to go back there.
Live from Berlin
I have always liked Germany and have seen a lot of it. Being a history buff, and particularly the history of World War II, cities completely destroyed and rebuilt as they were in the past, yet integrated with modernity, fascinate me.
In particular, the Frauenkirche in Dresden, in addition to being razed to the ground in 1945, is also peculiar in that it was rebuilt only beginning in 1994, then at the end of the communist regime, and was re-inaugurated only in 2005. It has a history to know.
In Berlin I lingered over a couple of details that I had not seen 23 years ago. In particular, I had not climbed to the roof of the Reichstag, the German parliament (featured).
