Once again this year I chose an alternative August bank holiday. After last year I was in the witch’s market in La Paz, this year I spent it in the little-known but very nice Subotica, in northern Serbia on the border with Hungary. It is a town with many art nouveau buildings made in the 1800s. During the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire it was in fact an important city.

It is less prominent now, but remains very lively with many clubs at night.

Despite the 33 degrees in the evening, I dined on excellent golash spending 17 Euros. Finally, I completed my Ferragosto at the most elegant and renowned venue in town: craft beer for 4 Euros and a front-row concert by an excellent cover band. With Hey Jude by the Beatles I went to bed satisfied.

In this link the most detailed account of my days in Serbia, full of encounters and reflective insights.

In Belgrade before the alternative August holiday

Before arriving in Subotica I spent 2 full days in Belgrade. The city is not ugly, the downtown elegant, very Austrian and with lots of green spaces, but it did not excite me.

Very pleasant were the chats with two girls I met through the couchsurfing site. After years when no one even answered me anymore, this time as many as 2, for the same city and with the same name!

The two Natasa took turns in an afternoon and evening in which they also took me to what is the largest Orthodox Cathedral in the Balkans.

In general I am not fond of churches, especially modern ones. By the way, this one from the outside is impressive but not special, while the inside is striking.
