I have wanted to visit this place for years, and I was probably lucky enough to admire it in its splendor. But I really think it is beautiful even without snow. Aquila and enjoying spectacular views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the small villages in which I made more or less long stops:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Civitella del Tronto, with its fortress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Campli and the holy staircase<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Santo Stefano di Sessanio, with several underpasses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Calascio, which you cross to get to the fortress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atri, with the splendid belvedere<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The video from Campo Imperatore<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From what was once the Campo Imperatore Hotel, currently abandoned, Benito Mussolini had escaped during World War II, thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/archivio.quirinale.it\/aspr\/gianni-bisiach\/AV-002-000268\/12-settembre-1943-mussolini-liberato-dal-gran-sasso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">an intervention by German paratroopers<\/a> sent by his friend Adolf Hitler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"340\" height=\"255\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.strangethingstraveling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/hotel-campo-imperatore.jpg?resize=340%2C255&#038;quality=69&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Hotel Campo Imperatore abandoned and in disuse\" class=\"wp-image-14412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.strangethingstraveling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/hotel-campo-imperatore.jpg?w=340&amp;quality=69&amp;ssl=1 340w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.strangethingstraveling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/hotel-campo-imperatore.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;quality=69&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This is what used to be Mussolini&#8217;s prison.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my plans was to go on a Sunday afternoon after a sumptuous lunch at a trattoria near the cable car; already with the appetizer I was full. I staggered to the ticket office and discovered that it was closed for construction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No big deal, in fact the opening was scheduled for the next day, my luck was still with me. It would have been a hoax to be there, right in the snow and not be able to go up there.
