In visiting New York I happened to fall asleep at the baseball stadium. This was one of the events I recounted in the second account I wrote via e-mail on my solo trip in 2004.

Central park in New York is also the place to find real animals. The squirrels are so used to people that they almost come into your arms.

Among many this was the most photogenic squirrel during my visit New York

I went to the financial district and the area with the trendy stores. Speaking of which, I walked around all day with chocolate-stained pants, having been assaulted early in the morning by a typical candy bar, but I heard that in the U.S. it is fashionable to have chocolate-stained pants, so I didn’t worry so much.

In Central park, I found the little garden dedicated to John Lennon (murdered nearby): just a few benches and a sign on the ground, rather skimpy and disappointing, the guy was uncomfortable.

I ate Italian, at Sbarro’s. They make good pizzas albeit very different from ours, it’s a chain, and evidently an Italian didn’t give them the name.

Visiting New York without skipping any famous place

I saw the Rockefeller Center, and the nearby public library, used as a shelter in the disaster movie The Day After Tomorrow. It is very warm, and right behind the library is a nice park, today with a free concert that I listened to while dozing in the shade.

I also went around to all the bookstores in the city, and I can state that there is no guide to the U.S. written in Italian. I ‘ve even asked for it at the consulate and also at a certain Vanni who is supposed to be the only Italian bookseller in N.Y. I bought a guidebook in Italian of New York alone, but for rich 50-year-olds, who knows where it will take me tonight.

I already got a scalp burn! Eh, yes, I have very short hair, sooner or later I will have to decide to become a hat-equipped traveler.

I’ve been to ground zero, approaching there is a strange air, and even if one didn’t know what happened over there, well, one feels that something is wrong; the saddest thing is to see the various signs referring to the twin towers, from when they were still there. I think it is a wound that will always remain open; even in the newspapers there is still a lot of talk about it even now.

So yesterday I took a little walk around Wall street, got a better look at China Town, some famous buildings, like the one made in the shape of an iron, then took a beautiful walk in the universal downpour, wanted to go into one of those super cool stores, but just thinking about the blaring air conditioning, considering how wet I was, I got a bout of pneumonia.

New York baseball game, asleep at stadium

Seeing a baseball game in New York was one of my goals. I saw the little-followed Mets, because the more famous Yankees were playing away. I didn’t get that much out of it, however, the atmosphere is beautiful, light years away from that in our stadiums.

Here no one would think of insulting opponents, or even wishing death on the referee or seeking fights. It’s a festival and you come here as a family and/or to eat. The problem was that it was never ending (also because they had to suspend it due to deluge). I was so tired, hadn’t yet got over the time difference, and…I admit I fell asleep!

No one noticed though, I swear: they were all caught up in the game, or the burgers.

I have been to Brooklyn and from the promenade that Woody Allen takes in so many of his films, at sunset. Walking across the bridge is also absolutely a must do, there are beautiful views and you also get a good view of the Statue of Liberty.

I have also been to the Metropolitan museum , which is full of interesting things. The best one is from Italy, and it’s a little room they took from Gubbio. Completely covered with inlays that made such a three-dimensionality as if there were furniture there, instead it’s just a wall.
